fic: ashes in the aftermath
The Master chuckled from where he slowly picked himself up off the TARDIS' floor, looking to where the Doctor stood, the doors open as he gazed out. Of course the Doctor could change things, go back and fix it but would he?
As the Master stood, the Doctor slowly sank to his knees, shoulders shaking as he watched the Earth burn. They'd stopped the End of Time and for what? So the Doctor could inflict one last devastating blow in the form of his oldest friend and best enemy. The heart wrenching sob from the kneeling Time Lord made the Master practically preen and he knew his answer.
The Doctor's choice.
Joining him by the open doors, he gazed out on the devastation, basking in the glow as if he were a cat sprawled out in the sun. The Doctor mustered enough strength to glare, tears still falling down his face, rage bubbling up at the Master's satisfaction.
"Six billion people," started the Doctor, voice shaking as he gritted his teeth.
The Master smirked as he cast a sideways glance at him. "6, 727, 949, 338, I believe was the exact count. Was being the operative word in all that."
That was enough to send the Doctor into a nigh incoherent rage and he grabbed the Master by the front of his hooded sweatshirt, holding him out over the atmosphere of the burning orb that was once Earth as it's oceans boiled and the continents broke up in fiery pools of magma. The Master grabbed his hands, instinctually, before forcing himself to let go.
"You can go back," started the Master, voice like silk as he taunted him with possibilities. "Stop me. Save them. Your precious humans."
The hands holding the Master shook and the Doctor pushed him a tiny bit closer to the edge, holding him there.
"They were always your favorite, go on, do them justice. Kill me."
The Doctor's sudden hauling him up startled him and he barely caught himself as he was shoved back toward the console, away from the doors; the Doctor slumping heavily to the grated floor. The Master smiled, sauntering back over to him and leaned down, placing his hands on either of the Doctor's shoulders in a facsimile of comfort. He leaned down, breath at his ear as he spoke in a low tone.
"I'm all you have now, my dear Doctor."
And with a kiss on the cheek he strode off into the TARDIS, leaving him there to watch his favorite planet fall.
