the devil is in the details

It was tiny, no bigger than a small coin but so much power was held within it. Only it wasn't made yet and the Master was growing quite impatient. He'd drawn out the schematics and the designs months ago.

He was quite disappointed with this new staff that had taken over since Lazarus' demise. They lacked his vision. His passion, however twisted. It was so easy to manipulate his ideas. An equation here an off comment there.

These people merely followed along clucking like chickens. No genius or creativity so he didn't feel bad for relieving them of their miserable little lives once their work was done. He whistled a tune and picked up the ring delicately, admiring the intricate design. He tossed it in the air and caught it easily, putting it in his pocket before leaving. The news was overcome with the destruction of the labs and the lives lost as he made his way to the jewelers.

"So it's just a slight resizing then, yeah?" asked the young woman who'd been blatantly flirting with him despite having seen his wedding band. He ignored it, Lucy was enough to handle as it was and he doubted she could bypass her traditional upbringing to even think about adding a third to the mix. Tiny little humans and their laughable concepts of sexuality.

He was amused at how ridiculously primitive this race could still be and blind to their place in a vast universe.

"Yes, just a resizing, love." he smiled easily.

"Kind of plain this is. I mean, love the design but wouldn't you like some color? Maybe purple or red? You could always go with basic black if you wanted to keep it low key." she offered.

"Color might be nice actually." he mused. "What would it cost me?"

"Oh, I'm certain we could work something out, sir."

The Master grinned and made a mental note to keep this one around. She was amusing. "Do you have a list?" She smirked as she turned to get the colors they offered and set them out before him.

He thought a moment as he perused the paper, lips pursed. Something significant but not to anyone but himself and the Doctor. Yes, that would be nice. It would mean nothing to these pitiful apes bumbling about but his best enemy had a sharp mind.

Still, he had to wonder if he would get the meaning when he saw it.

Chuckling softly, he pointed to a green color, caught somewhere between jade and emerald. "That color there is absolutely perfect."

"It'll go nicely with your eyes." she winked, taking up the papers and the ring once it was handed over. He smiled and watched her head to the back with the orders.

"Got a thing for that color or something? Special at all?"

He thought of lying. Of shrugging it off.

"Just something poignant between myself and a dear, old friend. Reminds me of old times, a return, of sorts."

She smiled kindly but unknowingly as he left his telephone number and she attempted to slip him hers, slyly. He pretended to be shocked but didn't put it away just yet.

"So we'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Saxon?"

"Of course, what was your name again, dear?"

"Tonya, sir."

"Tonya." he murmured. "I'll be seeing you later, sweet Tonya."

And with that he left the shop, turning the card with her number over in his hand. Massage therapist, he thought, putting the card away in his breast pocket.

Definitely have to remember her.
