A/N: Slight spoilers for the End of Time and a rare, tender moment between old enemies.
The air was light and cool, blowing gently and ruffling their hair and clothes without being bothersome. For the longest time both men were silent, only staring up at the stars shining out at them from the curtain of night. It was longer still before the silence was finally broken.
"How long do I have?" It was very different from the usual battle that seemed to accompany their words between each other.
His companion looked over to him, face scrunched in annoyance. "What kind of talk is that? We have as long as we want."
It was a lie but a lie he wanted to be true. Desperately so.
"I know this isn't real. It's just an illusion."
"But a nice illusion."
"Yes," came a soft chuckle. "A nice illusion."
Silence stretched thin between them before the Doctor spoke. "You were fading too quickly. This was all I could do."
"And here I was convinced this was your finest work," came the Master's reply, similar yet wholly different from their usual banter.
"Oh, do you have to cheapen it?"
"You expected anything more?"
The Doctor sighed. "How did you know?"
"You mean besides my remembering facing off against Rassilon, Mr. I Know?" he snorted.
"Don't knock it. I thought those were my last words."
"You were going to let those be your last words? You really have a taste for being dramatic."
The Doctor's turn to laugh rather loudly. "Oh, I have a taste for being dramatic? I suppose I learned from the best then."
The Master couldn't help the laugh he gave then before sighing. "I knew because it was quiet."
The Doctor turned on his side then, scrutinizing him closely before nodding. "Good. That's good." He deserved the silence, if only for a little while. He watched him a moment before speaking again. "Do you think things would've been so different if-"
"Perhaps. In another life."
"We could find a way. I could-"
"No. Those children we were are long since lost."
The Doctor swallowed hard. "They don't have to be," he said, watching as his oldest friend and best enemy started to fade, the illusion shifting and melting around them. The Master turned on his side then, giving a sigh and just watching the Doctor. So much lost between them. So many things that could've been different.
He propped himself up, crawling the small space between them and leaned down, so close, they could each imagine the other's breath against their skin. The Master reached out and clasped the sides of his face gently and leaned forward to press a chaste kiss to his forehead.
"Goodbye, Doctor."
The air was light and cool, blowing gently and ruffling his hair and clothes without being bothersome. For the longest time he was silent, eyes closed as the warmth from a touch that was not there faded from his cheeks and forehead. Long moments passed before he opened his eyes to stare up at the stars shining out at him from the curtain of night. It was longer still before the silence was finally broken.
"Goodbye, Master."

The interactions and the anger that is but is not quite there, and the truce that's there but not quite as well. I just love it.

I don't think they could have many, if any, moments like this outside of an illusion, really. There could never be a solid truce between them, unfortunately.
